My Favorite Books of 2021

I have read 41 books this year so far. While that is much less than previous years, I made it a point to stop reading for the quantity's sake and to really slow down and enjoy each and every book. I watched more TV, I went for more walks, and I listen to exactly zero …

Like Stephen King's On Writing, Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird discusses how painful and difficult writing is. Lamott puts a premium on discipline - the discipline of writing every day at a set time and trying hard to get the first draft out, no matter how bad it may be.  "A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a tree without roots." “This is A-1 content.” - @laurkilk , future influencer Jack Carr's @jackcarrusa fifth book in the James Reece series did not disappoint. He has quickly become one of the best in the military thriller genre, and I can't wait for the Amazon Prime series featuring Chris Pratt @prattprattpratt titled The Terminal List (the first book in the series) to come out in July. 🇺🇸 M U R P H [52:43] Ok, I’m never buying another book anywhere else. This library in Hampton Bays is the greatest hidden gem I’ve ever come across. I love novels based on historical reality. This fictional story is based on the incredible efforts of the Red Cross nurses stationed in the Philippines during WWII who were held in captivity. Remember when poker had a colossal run back in 2004-2008? It seemed like everyone was playing Texas Hold 'Em or watching the World Series of Poker. Poker is exciting because it is just as much a game of luck as it is a game of skill. It's similar to life in that you get good breaks and bad ones, but it's the ones who are able to stay resolute who end up succeeding.  Admittedly, this book is filled with a lot of the same things that practical self-help books like Atomic Habits, The Power of Habit, or The Happiness Advantage so there wasn't anything entirely ground-breaking within its pages. However, I will say that it was much more succinct than many of those other books so I would absolutely suggest Ikigai to someone who is new to the subject or genre altogether.
