The Weekly Rapport #3: Back from Some Time Off

I know it’s been a while. I’ve been pretty busy with work and traveling so I haven’t been in the same routine or method that I’m used to where I can schedule in my daily writing. It’s really important to me that I do at least some writing every day – even it’s typing a …

I have read all seven of the action-packed James Reece thrillers byJack Carr, all of which have been phenomenal. But this book takes a step into the past, with James’ father, Tom Reese. Founded by Rev. Jerry Falwell, Liberty is one of America’s largest evangelical universities—a place where students pray before class, follow a famously strict code of conduct, and prepare to become “Champions for Christ.” Roose enrolls as a transfer student, attends church, joins choir, goes on a spring break evangelism trip, and immerses himself in a world that couldn’t have been more different from his own. I got this book free for subscribing to Word on Fire, the Catholic media organization founded by Bishop Robert Barron. (Yes, free books are a perk of religious media subscriptions ;) I picked up this book at a Little Free Library near my house. It was short, and it was free, which were basically my only criteria. I decided to flip through it quickly and sure enough, I finished it in a day. The Seven Storey Mountain is Thomas Merton’s account of his conversion to Catholicism. Born in France in 1915 to a pair of artist parents who weren’t especially religious, he spent his teenage years in Douglaston, NY, and eventually landed at Columbia University. Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry book review 📚 I get a shit ton of book recommendations. Most I politely file away. You may have noticed my recent turn toward Christianity. Don’t worry, I’m not turning into some Bible-thumbing Jesus freak. But I am more curious than ever, so consider this me following that curiosity wherever it leads. After reading Mere Christianity, I went down the Christian apologetics rabbit hole, which eventually led me to the legendary Timothy Keller.
