The Subtle Art of Selective Sucking (Calm Down, It’s Not That)

The best way to free up your time in 2025? Stop doing things you suck at. Take vacations, for example. For years, I stressed myself out trying to travel hack like a pro. I’d sit through dinners with friends who’d brag about flying to Europe for free — maxing out their credit card points, gaming …

Fr. Richard Rohr is a Franciscan priest in New Mexico whom I first discovered through comedian Pete Holmes, believe it or not. Holmes is big into Christian mysticism and had mentioned Rohr enough times that I eventually figured I’d check him out myself. To be honest, I don’t get all that excited about new book releases anymore. But every year, there’s still one announcement that gets me amped: a new Jack Reacher novel At the heart of every man is one burning question: “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” - Matthew 11:29 In full transparency, I asked ChatGPT to recommend some books on the fundamentals of Christianity. Ever since Mere Christianity, I’ve been chasing that same high and mostly striking out. So if you’ve got suggestions, send them my way. I have read all seven of the action-packed James Reece thrillers byJack Carr, all of which have been phenomenal. But this book takes a step into the past, with James’ father, Tom Reese. Founded by Rev. Jerry Falwell, Liberty is one of America’s largest evangelical universities—a place where students pray before class, follow a famously strict code of conduct, and prepare to become “Champions for Christ.” Roose enrolls as a transfer student, attends church, joins choir, goes on a spring break evangelism trip, and immerses himself in a world that couldn’t have been more different from his own. I got this book free for subscribing to Word on Fire, the Catholic media organization founded by Bishop Robert Barron. (Yes, free books are a perk of religious media subscriptions ;) I picked up this book at a Little Free Library near my house. It was short, and it was free, which were basically my only criteria. I decided to flip through it quickly and sure enough, I finished it in a day.
