The Productivity Paradox: How a Sprained Thumb Saved My Sanity

In December last year, I embarked on what was supposed to be a week of unparalleled productivity Rising at 5 am each day, I fired off content, poured energy into reading dozens of books, and explored a newfound passion for writing during a blissful break from the usual grind. It was a barrage of content …

To be honest, I don’t get all that excited about new book releases anymore. But every year, there’s still one announcement that gets me amped: a new Jack Reacher novel At the heart of every man is one burning question: “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” - Matthew 11:29 In full transparency, I asked ChatGPT to recommend some books on the fundamentals of Christianity. Ever since Mere Christianity, I’ve been chasing that same high and mostly striking out. So if you’ve got suggestions, send them my way. I have read all seven of the action-packed James Reece thrillers byJack Carr, all of which have been phenomenal. But this book takes a step into the past, with James’ father, Tom Reese. Founded by Rev. Jerry Falwell, Liberty is one of America’s largest evangelical universities—a place where students pray before class, follow a famously strict code of conduct, and prepare to become “Champions for Christ.” Roose enrolls as a transfer student, attends church, joins choir, goes on a spring break evangelism trip, and immerses himself in a world that couldn’t have been more different from his own. I got this book free for subscribing to Word on Fire, the Catholic media organization founded by Bishop Robert Barron. (Yes, free books are a perk of religious media subscriptions ;) I picked up this book at a Little Free Library near my house. It was short, and it was free, which were basically my only criteria. I decided to flip through it quickly and sure enough, I finished it in a day. The Seven Storey Mountain is Thomas Merton’s account of his conversion to Catholicism. Born in France in 1915 to a pair of artist parents who weren’t especially religious, he spent his teenage years in Douglaston, NY, and eventually landed at Columbia University.
